About 45,000 people attended a memorial ceremony Wednesday at the Peace Memorial Park here to mark the 63rd anniversary of the 1945 U.S. atomic bombing of the city. Hiroshima Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba said the majority of the world wants to abolish nuclear weapons as shown by the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty signed by about 190 nations. The US is still not on that list.

Pockets of violence marred an otherwise upbeat pro-China rally in New Zealand's Aotea Square where thousands of Chinese came out in support of their home country and the Beijing Olympics.
