President Hamid Karzai survived an assassination attempt at a military parade in central Kabul on Sunday, when suspected Taliban insurgents fired mortars and bullets at the dignitaries assembled in the spectator stand. One person was killed and 11 injured in the incident.The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack and said that it could carry out an attack anywhere in Afghanistan.

5 years ago today, President Bush stood on the USS Abraham Lincoln with a sign draped behind him declaring "Mission Accomplished" as he called for the end of major combat operations in Iraq. With the war now in its 5th year, the White House is finally acknowledging the sign was not appropriate. Too bad they won't admit the same about the war in general.

Zimbabwe's government said one man was killed and two others were injured when opposition supporters tried to attack an army training camp. It's hard to believe that civilians would attack a military encampment and expect anything good to come of it. The Mugabe gov't continues to peddle the notion that its the opposition who are causing the problems, not the other way around.
