U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the United States would be prepared to reconcile with the Taliban if the Afghan government pursued talks to end the seven-year conflict in that country. The Taliban has been battling a U.S.-led coalition since it was toppled from power in 2001 for harboring Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda terrorist network.

A campaign of intimidation is underway in Zimbabwe where the high court is set to rule shortly on if the government must release the full election results. Militant supporters of Robert Mugabe descended on some of Zimbabwe's last white-owned farms in an orchestrated campaign. Tensions have reached a new high in the country as the election outcome remains in doubt.
