Gates: U.S. would support Afghan peace talks with Taliban

U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the United States would be prepared to reconcile with the Taliban if the Afghan government pursued talks to end the seven-year conflict in that country. The Taliban has been battling a U.S.-led coalition since it was toppled from power in 2001 for harboring Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda terrorist network.

France earmarks $549 million for green cars

French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Thursday pledged €400 million ($549 million) in state support for the development of electric and hybrid cars. He said during a visit to the Paris Auto Show that the money will be destined "exclusively for the research and development of nonpolluting vehicles" over fours years - and will come from funds already earmarked for environmental projects.

China milk scandal: Government says milk free of contamination

Tests on 609 batches of liquid milk, as sold in 27 cities under 75 different brand names, were all clear of melamine, the chemical at the center of the scandal, according to the product safety watchdog. A further 129 batches of baby milk powder and 212 batches of other kinds of milk powder were also clean.

The images of the "Beijing Internet Police", one male and one female dressed in uniform and saluting, started appearing in September 2007 every 30 minutes on computer screens run by 13 major portals based in Beijing. Virtual police officers will soon begin visible patrols on Chinese Internet sites to warn surfers they are being monitored.

Can't the USA At Least Make Their Flags Here?

Here's a picture of a USA flag pin, enclosed in a clear plastic (terrible for the environment) bag. The big letters "Made in China" almost cover the flag. This image sums up the US at this point in time - covered in goods and services made in China - even its own symbols and objects of importance don't come from their own country - they come from China.
